Additional

David Eagleman himself goes even further and, in addition to "substitution", also masters the "addition" of feelings. Indeed, such a belt (or any similar device) can transmit information not only from microphones, but also from any sensors in general. The scientist is actively experimenting with such unusual experiences, adjusting the system so as to feel the strength of the wireless Wi-Fi signal or, for example, the "mood of the city" – by the corresponding tags that are put down by its residents in their social networks at the moment. The British artist Neil Harbisson, who underwent a special operation to install an antenna in the skull, complements his feelings even more extreme.

From birth, unable to distinguish colors, thanks to the antenna, Harbisson was able to feel them for the first time (the antenna turned certain shades into sound vibrations, transmitting them to the bones) – and began to upgrade. In the latest model, the device allows the artist to distinguish 360 colors, including part of the IR and UV spectrum, sense the surrounding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks, and even identify specific people who have installed a special application on their smartphones. Thanks to his "augmented sensitivity", Harbisson said he finally began to have colored dreams.

“Color has never been a visual experience for me,” says the artist. – It is, rather, a special sensation of sounds. For people with normal vision, color is an imposition of optical waves, for me it is an imposition of acoustic waves. In my dreams, I began to hear such special electronic sounds, for me they are color perception. " In his description, you can notice something extremely important for understanding what our feelings are and how much it is possible to expand them.

Limited

Speaking of feelings, they usually mean experiences that arise in the brain under the influence of external and internal stimuli. The brain here is like a "black box", which by itself does not feel anything, only integrating and processing incoming signals. If necessary, its neurons can plastically switch from one type of information to another. However, they are also capable of rebuilding only within certain limits. Even if someday we receive implants that expand our vision to the infrared or X-ray region, give a full-fledged perception of electromagnetic fields or anything else, we will experience them in the same familiar ways, roughly described by Aristotle. People are familiar with only a few modalities of sensation – visual, auditory, mechanical, etc. – and we can only use them, but not perceive new ones. We may never escape beyond these doors of perception.
