A similar method of divination is described by researchers in Ossetians.

Regarding Enaarians, this term is explained by experts as a non-man (from the Iranian „nara“ – a man, „e“ – no). According to Herodotus, the disease of the Enarey had a divine origin: the Enarey are the descendants of the Scythians who looted the temple of Aphrodite Urania in the Syrian city of Ascalon, for which the goddess punished them with a female disease.

Pseudo-Hippocrates in his treatise „On Air, Water and Terrain“ denies the divine origin of the disease of the Enaarians. According to him, this disease has a natural cause: constant riding in many causes tumors, thighs, gout, which causes impotence, which was explained by the actions of the deity. This led to the enarai wearing women’s clothing, learning women’s habits and doing housework with women.

Describes Herodotus and the rite of the Scythian brotherhood – the oath of allegiance: in a vessel with wine mixed the blood of the parties to the treaty, dipped there akinak, arrows, ax and dart; after that, those who swore and the most respected of those present prayed for a long time and then drank wine (9,204). The existence of brotherhood among the Scythians is confirmed by archaeological finds in the royal mounds (Kul-Oba, Solokha).

The custom of smoking hemp, which was a peculiar form of shamanism, is also of cultic significance. The smoke from the cannabis burned in the yurt caused narcotic intoxication, which led to the ecstasy of those present and was the cause of the magical rites of shamans, the content of which is the ascent of souls into the underworld.

Similar to the Trypillians and Cimmerians, the Scythians buried the dead in a hunched form under the mounds. Along with this there was cremation. Both of these rites were passed on to other Slavs through the Ants and became widespread in pre-Christian times in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions.

Elements of the Scythian religious worldview were absorbed by the Slavic cult of the Family. It is a feeling of ancestral presence, faith in life after death. The Slavs burned or buried the dead. Food, weapons, and a horse, woman, or slave were put in the graves. They filled up hills or high mounds. A year after his death, a trizna was held at the grave.

N. Polonska-Vasylenko notes the significant influence of Scythian beliefs on the formation of the East Slavic religious and mythological system: „The Scythians continue to develop Trypillia mythology in the images of a fantastic animal style and transmit it through the Antoslav village: these are the images of the Mother Goddess, the shepherd Hercules a cyclops, a griffin, a cult bull, a horse, a wild boar, etc. Our house has an even clearer traditional connection with its stove. „

The Slavs attributed the miraculous powers of the patron saint of the family to the hearth connected with the furnace. According to the belief, when it collided with fire and earth, fertility increased, so the furnace was the sacred place where a woman should give birth to a child. At the same time, the furnace is the residence of the dead members of the family.

It is believed that the stove could pick up a sick child and bring her back healthy. This indicates the long-standing provision of fire with a regenerating function. Cleaning and protective properties were also attributed to the hearth. Fire was associated with the sun, which gave warmth and light. Solar power could give a girl beauty, give love. The same magical properties were given to the hearth. M. Kotsyubynsky in the story „In a human way“ describes an ancient custom when the hearth preserves the honor of a girl abandoned by a guy who promised to marry her.

The girl secretly broke into the groom’s house, and then sat down on the stove in front of everyone. In this case, neither the boy nor his parents could refuse the wedding. M. Gogol („Eyelashes“) also mentions the rite of purification by fire: people who carried the young lady’s body to the church put their hands on the stove. Confirmation of the unity of the sun and the hearth is the baking in the oven of loaves, shaped like the sun.

World harmony was physically symbolized in the image of the marriage of firelight with water. This symbol was performed on the day of Kupala and was a prototype of sexual union on earth. Therefore, at the end of the holiday, boys and girls were married. Similar holidays existed in many nations: Finns, Germans, Hungarians, Lithuanians and others.

The image of a duck, a goose on cult objects gives grounds to believe that the image of waterfowl among the Scythians was a religious symbol. Only waterfowl can move safely in three elements – on land, on water and under water, in the air. Slavs also honor waterfowl.

BO Rybakov believes that the duck was a symbol of connection with the afterlife. Only she could penetrate into the waters of the underground sea and return from there. Birds protective and magical functions, as well as combined with the idea of time and space.

Like the Scythians, the Slavs also worshiped the sword. In the chronicle of the monk Nestor „The Tale of Bygone Years“ it is mentioned that the Slavs worshiped the sword as the god of war.

The beginnings of historical knowledge were closely connected with the religious and mythological ideas of the Scythians about the amazing nature of the surrounding area. Here is how, in the legend of Herodotus, the Scythian ethnogenetic legend explains their origin, occupation, ethnic composition and organization of power. In the Scythian Land from Zeus and the daughter of literacy narrative ideas the river Borisphen the first man Targitai was born. Targitai had three sons, Lipoksai, Arpoksai and the younger Kolaksai. Soon gold objects fell to the ground: a plow, a yoke, an ax and a bowl.

Only the youngest of the brothers managed to take possession of these items. And his brothers did not succeed, because when they approached, the gold glowed, and it was impossible to touch it. The royal throne was inherited by Kolaksai, because he was able to take in his hands those items that symbolized the supreme power over the tribes of farmers and pastoralists.

From Lipoxay came the Scythians, who called themselves Avhats, from Arpoxay – Katyari, and from his younger brother – Paralati. As we can see, in this legend there is essentially a historical and ethnographic concept (the idea of local origin and characteristics of ethnic composition) of the population () and a socio-test doctrine (the idea of the divine origin of power and the supremacy of the royal Scythian paralates). And all this is united in a common religious and mythological worldview.

Noteworthy is the analogy of the motif of the Scythian legend mentioned above in Celtic customary law, which existed until recently: in the distribution of property between the brothers, the younger received an estate, 8 acres of land, as well as an ax, cauldron and ploughshare, because his father was not entitled to pass these three items to no one but the youngest son. The correspondence of these items of ax, bowl and plow with the yoke received by Kolaksai is unquestionable.

Echoes of this legend are also found in Ukrainian folklore. The heroes of many fairy tales are three brothers. And the royal laurels always go to the youngest. Only he manages to capture the fire-bird or the fire-horse, which are on the same mythological line with the gold objects from the Scythian legend.

Pagan cult of slavs

Servants of the pagan cult of the Slavs were the Magi, the founders of the doctrine of the first creator. They possessed the secrets of herbal medicine, were the creators of a kind of astrological medicine. The Magi preserved and passed from generation to generation geographical, astronomical, mathematical knowledge.

The human word, like the Druids, they endowed with secret magical power. The word could make a person happy or ruin it. It could cure a person of various diseases, defeat evil forces, work miracles. The Slavs called the poets prophets, believing that they knew the secrets of human existence. To this day, Ukrainians retain respect for the laws of their ancestors, recorded in proverbs, sayings, and songs rich in worldly wisdom.

Like the Celts, the Slavs had sacred groves that replaced their temples. Both the Slavs and the Celts have a living environment: trees and grasses talk to each other and to birds and people. The subjects of special reverence were their forests. The oak was considered the abode of the deity. Sacrifices were made to him. The heroes of many folk tales often fall into the kingdom of heaven on a tree. Even more often it is attributed to the dead.

According to ancient Slavic beliefs, the dead ascend the mythical oak to heaven to their ancestors. This, for example, explains the phrase „give the oak.“ In general, in the imagination of both the Celts and the Slavs, the tree played an important role in creating the world, and the image of the tree of life occupied an important place in the system of respect for nature. The tree of life is the embodiment of cosmogonic and temporal ideas: its roots went to the depths of the earth, to the realm of the dead, the trunk symbolized the generation of the living, and the leaves and crown – the abode of gods and spirits.

The cult of the tree is one of the oldest. It is associated with the image of the tree-protector. Under the tree they prayed, ate, rested, died. They hid behind enemies from the trees. The longevity of the tree elevated him above the lives of people and animals. Plants, which carried a part of the fruitful power of nature, were like a guarantor of belief in the beneficial effects of nature on human destiny. This, in turn, leads to the spread of rituals of industrial and healing magic, divination on plants and the emergence of the famous horoscope of the Druids, which traces the connection of human characters with trees.

Features of Ukrainian mythology

Ukrainian myths are characterized by the fact that they are extremely natural, associated with the farming or pastoral life of our ancestors. Their characters are mostly father-owner, mother-hostess, their sons and daughters, their cattle and deer. In the most archaic carols and Christmas carols you can find the glorification not of a particular family of people, but rather – an echo of the glorification of the family of celestial bodies and natural phenomena: the sun, moon, stars, light rain, etc …

People lived in complete harmony with nature and therefore both Gods and mythical creatures were natural and native to them. Byzantine myths at the beginning of the Christian era were alien and incomprehensible to the ancient Ukrainians, so they tried to preserve their secret faith, often hiding in the deaf forests and thickets, inaccessible to missionaries of the new faith. Unfortunately, few written works about folk beliefs have survived.

A characteristic feature of Ukrainian mythology is pantheism, ie philosophical and religious teachings, according to which God was identified with nature. In Ukraine, there was a kind of hierarchy of Gods: at the head of the whole world were the oldest Gods, who ruled all life, followed by lower-ranking Gods, as well as demons who provided services to the older Gods; at the very „foot“ were people endowed with enough power to defeat the demons.

Gogol („Eyelashes“): people who carried the young lady’s body to the church put their hands on the stove.
